Ashley:
Hey Brie, I love writing songs and poems and stuff, but I always feel like mine aren't good enough. Do you have any tips on how to write the perfect song?
Brie: Hi Ashely. The first thing you have to realize is that there is no "perfect song" - almost every time I finish a new song it's nothing like how I originally envisioned it. I guess the creative process is imperfect by nature. Second, be able to back up anything you say. If the ink on your page is exactly what comes from your heart, then be proud of your statement. You will always feel vulnerable to others' opinions, but it's best to develop your own. And third, be comfortable with the idea of bearing your soul. To be a good songwriter, you have to let go of any doubt or worry about others' emotions and focus on your own. Hope that helps!
Therese:
What type of music do you listen to? Who are some good artists that have must need CDs?
Brie: I like more off beat indie rock: Bright Eyes, Sons & Daughters, Modest Mouse, Cursive, Willy Mason, Trevor Hall, Tracy Bonham, and The Faint are a few to check out. As a lyricist, I look for strong lyrical content and heartfelt singing. It's very important to support artists who are creating feelings and play instruments, rather than trying to write a song that will get massive radio play. The sad truth is a lot of beautiful music will fall to deaf ears... I commend you for trying to find out about amazing unknown artists!
Andrew:
I really like this girl at my school, but I don't know what to do. She is one of my friends, but about 85% of her friends are guys, so I don't know if she has a boyfriend or not. What should I do?
Brie: Hey Andrew! Let's put it in simpler terms. What do you want? If you want to be her boyfriend, what will it take? First, make sure she is available (you don't want to be wasting your time). You can just ask her in a casual way or write a letter. If she is unattached, ask her if she would like to hang out some time. Girls are attracted to guys that take the initiative. If she says no, there's no real harm done and you'll have some practice in asking a girl out. You'll also do better the next time. Someone will always appreciate a great guy.
